         With the world going global, nowadays, English has become a more important and primary communication tool than before. To communicate fluently in English, some foreign students select the summer English program at the University of Toronto (U of T). Does it deserve the cost of not only money, but vacation time? Is it the best method for improving English? I am confident that there are more advantages than disadvantages to join the summer program at U of T.

 Dear Ellen and fellow classmates, my name is Sophia. Today, I’d like to introduce my home country -- Taiwan . I will divide my presentation into three parts. Fist, I’ll talk about Taiwan ’s location and history. Then, I’ll introduce some attractions in Taiwan . In the end, I’m going to talk about some misunderstandings about Taiwan .

       (秀地圖，比例尺由小到大)Taiwan consists of the main island of Taiwan and a lot of small islands. It is located southeast of the coast of mainland China , southwest of Japan , and northwest of Philippine. It’s bound to the East by the Pacific Ocean . About four hundreds years ago, the Spanish passed through here and named the island Formosa , which means what a beautiful island it is! Until now, Taiwan is also known as Formosa . On the map, it looks so small.

       In history, Taiwan was settled by Dutchman, Spanish, Chinese and Japanese. The trace of different cultures is still well-preserved. One of the most celebrated places is the National Palace Museum (投影片1). Its antique collection from China is the most comprehensive in the world. Another breathtaking place you don’t want to miss is Taipei 101(投影片2). It is the world’s tallest inhabited building and the premier shopping destination for luxury goods, fashion and fine dining.(CN Tower:553 meter, the tallest free-standing structure, but not a building.)
      Finally, I want to clarify some misunderstandings about Taiwan . (投影片3)Many people mistake Taiwan for Thailand . The pronunciations are similar, and they are both in Asia , but they are two different countries. The second point (投影片4)I want to make is that Taiwanese speak Mandarin, sometimes called Chinese, but Taiwanese is not equal to Chinese, just like Americans and Canadians speak English, but they are not Briton. Last but not least,(投影片5) Taiwan is a sovereign nation. Taiwan has been independent for over sixty years. We vote for our own presidents; we have our own dollars(秀紙鈔), and have government, laws and economy system of our own. However, under the pressure of Beijing , most countries don’t recognize Taiwan as a nation, but a province of China . As a result, we can hardly join international organizations, such as UN or WHO. When our athletes win medals in the Olympics, we can’t raise our national flag, and we can’t sing our national anthem. Many Taiwanese still bring our national flag when they go to international sports events. They hope the flag can be known through international media. Therefore, maybe one day you’ll see a flag like this. (秀國旗)
