Sophia Liao
With the world going global, nowadays, English has become a more important and primary communication tool than before. To communicate fluently in English, some foreign students select the summer English program at the University of Toronto (U of T). Does it deserve the cost of not only money, but vacation time? Is it the best method for improving English? I am confident that there are more advantages than disadvantages to join the summer program at U of T.
First of all, some disadvantages of studying at the U of T include the financial cost and time involved. Besides board and residence fee, adding to tuition and insurance fee, it comes to more than 3,100 CAD. In addition, the amount of airfare is enormous. What a humongous expense it is! In particular, the Canadian dollars has risen up 50 percent in a decade in the currency market. It makes the price of attending in Canada higher than most other counties. Furthermore, the program takes four to eight weeks. It occupies most part of summer vacation time. On the other hand, it is too short for learning English within two months.
On the bright side, U of T provides the best educational and geographical environment for studying English. By studying at U of T, students also dwell in the largest city in Canada- Toronto. Toronto is a remarkable and multicultural city, with famous attractions such as the CN tower, Niagara Falls , Wonderland, Casa Loma, and Little Italy. Students can practice English when visiting the sites. Alternatively, students can taste the campus life at U of T- ranked by Maclean’s Magazine the Top 5 universities in Canada . The surrounding is so studious and safe that can help students to learn more effectively.
Last but not least, the school creates a perfect English-learning environment with highly qualified teachers and multicultural students. After a process of classification for students, teachers teach in accordance with students’ aptitude and levels. They guide students to learn language blow-by-blow, correct pronunciation one by one, and conduct to write formal essays step by step. Therefore, students can study English effectively and efficiently. In addition, associating with classmates who come from diverse countries can attract students to study English ceaselessly. When they need to communicate with each other, they must talk in English. In other words, all they can connect with each other is through English. As a result, they will try their best to make English fit in their lives on campus. This forces students to improve effectively their English ability.
In conclusion, the advantages of studying English at U of T are more obvious and conspicuous than disadvantages. By attending summer program at U of T, students accrue the right methods to studying English, the opportunities to practice with aliens, and the experience of sightseeing in Toronto . The studying experience ensures that students can obtain the proper approach to studying English, which is very useful for a lifetime. Therefore, I firmly believe that it is an excellent choice to attend the summer program at U of T.
